Change Network Driver for Existing Virtual Machines

I would like to change the driver for existing VMs to use virtio? What is the best way to accomplish this task?

One way I have done this is to use virsh edit vm-name on the node the vm is running on, and change the model=virtio. But I doubt this will persist the settings from the management node.

Currently you can not modify a running VM. The only two ways I can think of are:

  • Hotplug a new virtio network interface
  • Create a new VM that uses the same disks but the interfaces are virtio
